UPDATE ON THE DISPLACEMENT OF FOREIGN NATIONALS IN BREDASDORP

Since Monday, 8 June 2026, incidents of intimidation against foreign nationals have resulted in a number of persons being displaced from their homes in Bredasdorp.

A total of 395 displaced foreign nationals are being accommodated in Bredasdorp Community Hall. This number includes 92 children. The displaced persons comprise 252 Zimbabwean nationals, 117 Malawian nationals, 25 Mozambican nationals and 1 Namibian national.

The Zimbabwean and Mozambican Consulates have commenced verification processes, after which appropriate arrangements will be made in consultation with the affected persons and relevant authorities. The Municipality is in contact with the Malawian Consulate and is awaiting confirmation of when its verification process will commence.

The South African Police Service, the Department of Home Affairs and the relevant foreign consulates are managing the verification and repatriation processes. While immigration matters and repatriation fall within the mandate of national government and foreign consulates, the Cape Agulhas Municipality is providing temporary shelter and facilitating the provision of humanitarian assistance to those affected by the unrest.

The Municipality would like to express its sincere appreciation to the many organisations who have assisted with the provision of food, clothing, toiletries and other essential support to displaced persons during this difficult time.

The Municipality will continue to work closely with the South African Police Service, the Department of Home Affairs, humanitarian organisations and other stakeholders to maintain public safety and restore stability within the community.
